Sympathique Madarao was a ski area located close to Madarao Mountain Resort - traditionally known as just Madarao Kogen - in Iiyama City in northern Nagano Prefecture. While the lower elevation of Sympathique Madarao was at around 770m, the 'base' of this ski area was effectively at the top of the Number 1 pair lift, with the slopes going down from that highest starting point. This ski area first opened in 1984 but in later years had a complicated on-off status before closing.

  • The main 'base' of Sympathique Madarao was at the top of the area
    　
  • There was an 80m half-pipe in the lower area
    　
  • The two lifts were called Number 1 and Number 3
    　
  • No records can be found of there ever being a Number 2 lift
    　
  • In the later years of operation, Sympathique Madarao had a somewhat complicated history of closing and then re-opening
    　
  • It closed in 2011 after the operating company went bankrupt
    　
  • The ski area re-opened for the 2012-2013 season
    　
  • However, it has been closed since the 2014-2015 season
    　
  • According to official statistics published by Iiyama City, 41,000 people visited Sympathique Madarao in 1989
    　
  • In the final winter season the number of visitors was 5,420 people
    　
  • The hotel at the top is now called Madarao Kanko Hotel  斑尾高原ホテル
    　
  • Sympathique Madarao was also sometimes referred to as Madarao Kogen Sympathique  斑尾高原サンパティックスキー場
    　
  • The same operating company also at one time also owned the nearby Madarao Kogen Toyota (also now closed and featured on this website)
