Shinrin Koen Suisu Mura

[Swiss Village Ski Resort]

Kyotango City, Kyoto

森林公園スイス村スキー場 京都府京丹後市

This ski area was known by several names. While it was officially called Shinrin Koen Suisu Mura in Japanese, it also sometimes used the English name Swiss Village Ski Resort. The ski area opened in 1984 in Yasaka Town, now part of Kyotango City, in the northern region of Kyoto-fu. Before officially closing, it endured one season when it could not open even for one day due to a lack of snow. Since 2022 the slope has been used for various snow activities, but the ski lifts are not used.

Further Information

  • This ski area opened in 1984 in Yasaka Town 弥栄町, before the town became part of Kyotango City in 2004

  • It has been seen listed under several names over the years

  • Earlier guidebooks call it Yasaka-cho Suisu Mura Ski Area 弥栄町スイス村

  • ...or just Suisu Mura スイス村スキー場 (Swiss Village)

  • Shinrin Koen Suisu Mura 森林公園スイス村スキー場 (which directly translates as Forest Park Swiss Village) appears to be the official name

  • But it has also been called Kyotango Shinrin Koen Suisu Mura 京丹後森林公園スイス村スキー場

  • The English Swiss Village Ski Resort name has also been seen in some Japanese guidebooks

  • That's five different names!

  • The ski area had one pair lift and two single lifts

  • Parking and the base were by the pair lift, with the other two lifts on the other side of the hill

  • The road back to the base was used as a ski run

  • At its most popular in 1991, about 42,000 people visited the ski area during the winter season

  • That number had fallen to under 10,000 since 2009, and the ski area was losing money

  • Ageing facilities, widening choices of other ski areas (and other forms of entertainment), as well as increasing worries about low snowfall in the region were given as reasons for closing

  • At one time, the area received quite a lot of snow, but the ski area was unable to open for even one day during the 2018-2019 season due to a lack of snow

  • The ski lifts have not operated since then

  • Since 2022, the old ski area has been used as a facility called Snow Dondon Park in Suisu Mura スノーどんどんパーク in スイス村

  • It is aimed at families with young children and offers snow tubing, snowmobiling and other activities in the snow
