Iizuna Kogen

Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture

飯綱高原スキー場 長野県長野市

Iizuna Kogen was located to the north of Nagano City on the southern slopes of Mt Iizuna. It was located between the still-operating Togakushi on the western slopes and Iizuna Resort on the eastern slopes of the same mountain. Iizuna Kogen was owned by the city and was popular with locals. The Moguls events of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics were held on the F Course and Tae Satoya won the gold medal. Subsequently, the course was named after her. In recent years Iizuna Kogen struggled with snowfall and made various changes to lift and course operations. The last day of operation was 16th February 2020.

Further Information

  • Iizuna Kogen opened in 1965 with one single lift

  • At one time there were seven ski lifts in operation

  • The triple lift and single lift were not operating in later years

  • There were effectively three separate base areas at Iizuna Kogen

  • Iizuna Kogen was the venue for the freestyle skiing Ariel and Mogul events of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics  1998年長野オリンピック

  • Tae Satoya  里谷多英  won the gold medal in the Women's Mogul event  女子フリースタイルスキー・モーグル

  • She became the first Japanese woman to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics

  • Subsequently the F Course was officially re-named Satoya Tae Course  里谷多英コース

  • Due to downscaling, the Satoya Tae Course was closed in 2008 but it re-opened the following season...

  • ...without moguls!

  • Iizuna Kogen was operated by Nagano city

  • In 2018 Nagano city was hoping to find a new owner - at virtually no cost - but no business came forward

  • The closing of the resort was announced before the start of the last 2019-2020 winter season

  • The planned 2019-2020 season was from 21st December 2019 until 15th March 2020

  • Unfortunately, it was only able to open for a few days in January 2020 due to a severe lack of snow

  • The last day of operation was on 16th February 2020

  • On closing, Iizuna Kogen reported that since opening 5,100,839 people had visited the ski area

  • The ski lifts and facilities are going to be removed and the mountain will be returned to nature

  • The area is going to concentrate on 'green season' tourism activities such as camping
