Ski areas from Japan’s past 過去の日本のスキー場を懐かしむ

Daisenji (Kamidaki)

Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture

大川寺(上滝)スキー場
富山県富山市

Daisenji was a small ski area in what used to be Kamidaki Town, now Toyama City, in Toyama Prefecture. Initially, the ski slope was known as Kamidaki. In 1958, an amusement park facility opened on the flat land next to the ski slope. Both the amusement park and ski slope closed in March 1997. The facilities were removed by 2000, and since then, nature has been very busy reclaiming the land.

Further Information

  • According to some old town documents, people were skiing at this location as far back as 1922

  • It was originally known as Kamidaki Ski Area

  • Kamidaki 上滝町 was the name of the town

  • Kamidaki Town became part of Ooyama Town 大山町 in 1955, and subsequently Ooyama Town became part of Toyama City 富山市 in April 2005

  • It seems to have later been known as Daisenji Ski Area, but it is not clear when - and even if -  the name of the ski area ever officially changed

  • Daisenji Temple 大山寺 is close by

  • In 1958, a leisure/amusement park opened on the flat land by the ski slope

  • It was called Daisenji Yuen 大川寺遊園 and featured a garden, boating on a small lake and fishing

  • There then followed a period of development with a Ferris wheel (1967), roller coaster (1970) and double corkscrew roller coaster (1980) added to the park

  • In 1980, about 350,000 people visited the amusement park

  • Visitor numbers dropped in the following years as an increasing number of alternative amusement parks opened

  • The Fantasy Coaster opened in 1992

  • In 1995, the number of visitors was down to around 95,000

  • In February 1997, it was decided that the amusement park would close and was subsequently closed at the end of March 1997

  • The ski area appears to have closed at the same time as the amusement park

  • While the amusement park can clearly be seen on the above images from 1975 and 1988, the exact location of the ski hill is unclear

  • But it was definitely at the far end of the park - one (or both?) of the protruding sections to the south of the rides

  • By 2000, all of the facilities had been removed, and the land restored to its original state

  • The old location is not accessible with clear No Entry signs at the old entrance

  • The nearby train station on the Kamidaki Line上滝線, and originally one of the main ways people visited, has undergone various name changes over the years

  • Originally it was known as Kamidaki Koen Shita Eki 上滝公園下駅

  • The name was changed to Daisenji Koen Station 大川寺公園駅 in 1959

  • It subsequently changed to Daisenji Yuen Station 大川寺遊園駅 in 1967

  • Finally, it was changed to the current name, Daisenji Station, in 1997
