Furukawa

Hida City, Gifu Prefecture

古川スキー場 岐阜県飛騨市

Furukawa was a ski area in what used to be Furukawa Town, now part of Hida City, in the northern region of Gifu Prefecture. The ski area opened in 1956 and closed around 1990. Since the early 2000s, a local group of volunteers has been working to plant 1,000 cherry blossom trees on the old ski slope, and they have named it Tsuioku no niwa (‘Garden of Memories’). Nice touch.

Further Information

  • Furukawa Ski Area was a ski area in Furukawa Town 古川町

  • It opened in December 1956

  • The ski area hosted a Gifu Prefecture ski competition in 1958

  • A single ski lift was built in 1963

  • Local town events were also held at the ski area, and it seems to have been a popular local leisure facility

  • The Hida Furukawa Youth Hostel ひだ古川ユースホステル used to be at this location

  • The ski area closed around 1990

  • In 2002 a group of local volunteers formed a group with the aim to revitalise the old ski slope

  • The group is called 千本桜夢公園整備委員会

  • They aim to plant a thousand cherry trees on the old ski slope, and many trees have already been planted

  • The area is shown on maps as Senbonomu Park 千本桜夢公園

  • The location has also been named Tsuioku no niwa 追憶の庭 ('garden of memories')

  • There is now a sign close to where the ski lift used to be that mentions the ski area

  • (There are also lots of 'beware of bears' signs!)

  • The ski lift was removed, but for many years, the concrete base foundation remained

  • By 2022 the foundation had been cleanly removed

  • At the time of publishing, the ski lift concrete base can still be seen on the Google Street View image below

  • Furukawa Town became part of Hida City 飛騨市 in February 2004
