Further Information

  • This ski area is on the northeastern slopes of Mt Funayama

  • It opened in 1963 in what used to be Kuguno Town 久々野町

  • Kuguno Town became part of Takayama City 高山市 in February 2005

  • The town-operated ski area was initially called Funayama Kogen Ski Area 舟山高原スキー場

  • The name was changed to Hidafunayama Snow Resort Arktopia in 1998 for its 35th anniversary

  • Apparently, the 'Arktopia' in the current name comes from the words Ark and Utopia (...though not sure why!)

  • At one time, there were seven ski lifts

  • Two 400m single lifts were replaced by a 575m quad lift (Apple Liner)

  • There was also a 455m top single lift called Blueberry Liner and a mid-section pair lift called Cherry Liner

  • In later years, only four ski lifts were operating, and they were known as Peach Liner, Apple Liner, Melon Line and Pear Liner

  • 29,766 people visited the ski area in 2017

  • In the most popular period for the ski area (around 1990), that number was about 45,000 people

  • The region suffered from low snowfall in recent years

  • The city decided to discontinue the operation of the ski area in 2022

  • During a visit to the location in June 2023, all of the facilities and ski lifts were still in place, but since then, work has started to remove them
