Further Information

  • When this ski area opened, it was part of Hamamasu Village 浜益村

  • In October 2005, Hamamasu Village became part of Ishikari City 石狩市

  • The ski area was operated by the village, hence the name Sonmin

  • It was on the southern slope of the 169m Suribachiyama 摺鉢山

  • In some guidebooks, the ski area was known as Hamamasu Suribachiyama Ski Area 浜益摺鉢山スキー場

  • The lift at this ski area was a rare schlep lift, which drags riders up the slope with their skis remaining on the snow surface (rather than sitting on a chair)

  • It was positioned centrally with the ski runs on either side and quite steep in places

  • The season was generally from early January until the end of February

  • Hamamasu was skiers-only, meaning that snowboarding was not allowed

  • A few guidebooks from the 1990s say that the ski area was closed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

  • The 2007-2008 season seems to have been its last

  • Until at least quite recently, the base lodge building and ski lift remained

  • The base lodge has been demolished, and there are now a few new buildings at the old ski area base

  • One is for the south branch of the Ishikari Fire Brigade 石狩消防団浜益南分団

  • The other is the Suribachiyama Community Hall 摺鉢山会館

  • The old ski lift appears to remain in the bushes, but that is not 100% confirmed

  • The nearby summit of Suribachiyama has a top elevation of 169m, but a sign at the top claims it is 469m!
