Birao

Teshikaga Town, Hokkaido

ビラオスキー場 北海道弟子屈町

Birao was a ski area located on the eastern slopes of Mt Birao, close to the central area of Teshikaga Town in the eastern region of Hokkaido. There was skiing on these slopes back in 1946 and one old guide book shows three single lifts. At one time there was one triple lift, one pair lift and one single lift At the time of closing it appears that only the triple lift was operating. Birao closed in 2008.

Further Information

  • The origins of Birao ski area go back to 1946
     
  • It was originally known as Kokusetu Birao  国設美羅尾スキー場
     
  • At some point it simply became Birao using katakana characters rather than kanji
     
  • An old guide book shows that the ski area had three single lifts - unconfirmed)
     
  • The triple lift was called Yellow Triple Lift  イエロートリプルリフト  and it was initially installed in 1972
     
  • That lift was originally known as Biraozan Number 1 Triple Lift  美羅尾山第1トリプルリフト
     
  • The top single lift was called Red Lift  レッドリフト  and was installed in 1972
     
  • It used to be called the Number 2 lift and appears to have been rested before the ski area closed
     
  • The pair lift covering lower areas of the ski area was called Blue Lift  ブルーリフト  and it was installed in 2000
     
  • Artificial snow making machines were used
