Morappu

Tomakomai City, Hokkaido

Morappu was a ski area near the eastern shores of Lake Shikotsu and the Shinkotsuko Onsen hot spring area of Tomakomai City in Hokkaido. It opened in 1973 and featured two single lifts. Since closing in 1994, the lifts and facilities have been removed, and nature has taken control of the location with little to no evidence of a ski area remaining.

Further Information

  • This ski area was on the northern slopes of the 506.5m Mt Morappu モラップ山, quite close to the eastern shores of Lake Shikotsu 支笏湖

  • There was a 1km approach road off the main Route 453 road, about 2km south of the Shinkotsuko Onsen hot springs area

  • Records can be found of the ski area being known by five variations on the name in Japanese:

  • Morappu Ski Area

  • Morappuyama Ski Area

  • Kokusetsu Morappu Ski Area

  • Morappu Kokusetsu Ski Area

  • Kokusetsu Morappuyama Ski Area

  • The ski area opened on 15th December 1963

  • By all accounts, the course for beginners was very gentle

  • The run for advanced skiers was quite steep, and it often was not skiable even in January due to lack of sufficient snow cover

  • Morappu Ski Area closed in 1994, but apparently, it was only in 2001 that it was officially abandoned

  • The ski lifts and all facilities were removed

  • The area is now completely covered in trees and bushes, with no indication that there used to be a ski area at the location

  • The only remaining evidence appears to be a bus stop sign called (Ski Area Entrance) along Route 453, near the turn-off for the ski area approach road
