Tengu Kogen

天狗高原スキー場　高知県津野町

Tengu Kogen was a small ski area in Tsuno Town in Kochi Prefecture, close to the border with Ehime Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku in western Japan. The location is in the Shikoku Karst Prefectural Natural Park. There were two short ski lifts, but there is conflicting information out there regarding their details.

  • Details about Tengu Kogen Ski Area have always been curiously difficult to find - even when it was a functioning ski area and listed on SnowJapan.com
    　
  • Tengu Kogen was a small ski area at a high elevation of around 1,400m
    　
  • The location is in the Shikoku Karst Prefectural Natural Park 四国カルスト県立自然公園
    　
  • The ski slope was just inside Kochi Prefecture but literally just metres away from the border with Kuma Kogen Town 久万高原町 in Ehime Prefecture 愛媛県
    　
  • Apparently, there were two short ski lifts
    　
  • In different guidebooks from the 1970s and 1980s, those lifts have been called rope tows, schlep lifts, single lifts or 'super lifts' (!)
    　
  • No old photographs can be found to confirm, but the few images found seem to show simple rope tows style surface lifts
    　
  • The slope was short and quite gentle
    　
  • Access to the location is by a long and winding mountain road
    　
  • An accommodation called Hoshifuru Village TENGU 星ふるヴィレッジTENGU can be found at the location
