Kamishiro

Hakuba Village, Nagano Prefecture

神城スキー場 長野県白馬村

Kamishiro was the name of a ski area in the Kamishiro neighbourhood of Hakuba Village in Nagano Prefecture. This ski area existed before what is now known as Hakuba Goryu was fully developed. The top of the Kamishiro slope was connected with the Champion Expert Course at Hakuba Goryu as that ski area expanded. The ski lift at Kamishiro closed in the 1980s and has been removed. In recent years the area has been used as an official tree run course of Hakuba Goryu and is known as the Kamishiro Gelande.

Further Information

  • Kamishiro is the name of the neighbourhood where the popular Hakuba Goryu  白馬五竜スキー場  ski area is currently located

  • Back in the 1950s the first ski area in this location was known as Kamishiro Ski Area  神城スキー場

  • Over the years Kamishiro Ski Area developed into what became Hakuba Goryu, now officially known as ABLE Hakuba Goryu

  • The ski lift at Kamishiro was the third lift to be put into operation in Hakuba village

  • The lift was located just to the south of Kamishiro Ski Hutte 神城スキーヒュッテ

  • When the 4-person Telecabin at Hakuba Goryu opened close by in November 1973, it was the first gondola lift to be installed in Japan

  • (It was upgraded to an 8 person gondola in 1995)

  • Hakuba Goryu was known as Hakuba Toomi  白馬とおみスキー場 until 1997

  • At one time the top area of Kamishiro was connected with the Champion Expert Course  チャンピオンエキスパートコース at Hakuba Goryu

  • The exact closing date of Kamishiro as a ski area is unclear, but the Kamishiro ski lift appears to have closed around the 1982 season

  • The course eventually disappeared from ski maps around the late 1980s

  • Since the 2016-2017 season the old Kamishiro slope coming off the Champion Expert Course has been labelled on the official Hakuba Goryu course map as a Tree Area  ツリーエリア

  • In the previous year it had not been officially announced but had been known by a few as an unofficial 'side country' area

  • A sign on the mountain notes Kamishiro Gelande Tree Area  神城ゲレンデツリーエリア  (written in English as 'Ungroomed area / Kamishiro tree area')

  • There are also warnings that the area is for Experts Only

  • The Kamishiro tree area is not always open and is dependent on snow conditions and safety checks

  • The Goryu Katakuri park  五竜カタクリ苑  is located close to what used to be the lower area of Kamishiro

  • Katakuri is the dogtooth violet flower and usually in bloom around Golden Week in late April to early May
