Ontake Ropeway

Kiso Town, Nagano Prefecture

御岳ロープウェイスキー場
長野県木曽町

Ontake Ropeway was a ski area located on the eastern slopes of Mt Ontake in Kiso Town, Nagano Prefecture. The name implies a 'Ropeway' lift (aerial tramway), rather than a 'Gondola' lift (cabins suspended from a continuously circulating cable). The Ontake Ropeway ski area was actually a 2,333m long Gondola-style lift along with three pair lifts. The Gondola lift continues to operate during the summer months.

Further Information

  • The ski area is called Ontake Ropeway, but the main lift was actually a 6-person gondola lift

  • The gondola went from base to summit giving access to all the courses of the ski area

  • In addition, there were three pair lifts lined up one after another going from base to top

  • The ski area closed in 2011 due to declining number of visitors

  • After the ski area closed, the gondola lift continued to operate during the summer season for sightseeing and trekking
