Racing Camp Nobeyama was a ski area located in Minamimaki Village in the eastern region of Nagano Prefecture and close to the border with Yamanashi Prefecture. It was found on the northern facing slopes of Meshimoriyama and offered fine views of the nearby Yatsugatake mountain range. With a focus on intermediate to advanced level courses, it was popular with ski racing enthusiasts and various race events were held on the slopes. Racing Camp Nobeyama closed in 2008.

Further Information

  • Racing Camp Nobeyama was originally known as Nobeyama  野辺山スキー場

  • The name was changed to Racing Camp Nobeyama around 2004

  • Only three of the lifts were operating in later years

  • One of the two parallel pair lifts had a mid-point where riders could alight

  • With slopes more suited to intermediate level and above - and as the newer name implied - this ski area was popular with racers

  • Regular race events were held at this ski area

  • The national team also apparently practiced on these slopes

  • This region is not known for particularly heavy snowfall - many artificial snow-making machines were used to help nature out, making for high operating costs

  • As of November 2023, the main entrance sign remains, but the road beyond is gated and locked

  • A road that goes close to the base on the other side also has a locked gate

  • As such, this old ski area location can only be partly seen from a distance

  • At an altitude of 1,345m, the nearby Nobeyama Station on the Koumi line is the highest (normal) train station in Japan

  • The Nobeyama Radio Observatory  国立天文台野辺山  is located close to the base of the old ski area and features a 45m radio telescope

  • The beautiful Yatsugatake mountain range can also be seen to the west
