Omachi

Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture

大町スキー場 長野県大町市

Omachi was a ski area located to the north of the central area of Omachi City in the north-western region of Nagano Prefecture. Omachi opened in 1927 and at one time had areas on both sides of Prefecture Road 31, also known as the Nagano Omachi Line. Before closing in 2008, only the larger area on the west side of the road remained open. The area now features an off-road vehicle course.

Further Information

  • Omachi was originally known as Nakayama  中山スキー場

  • This ski hill was operated by Omachi City

  • It opened in 1927 and it was the oldest ski area in the city

  • There used to be two distinct sections on either side of the road

  • The section on the east side of the road at one time featured a single ski lift (Number 2), a rope tow lift and escalator

  • At the time of the ski hill closing in 2008 only the larger section on the west side of the road was still operating

  • That section featured the Number 1 and Number 3 pair lifts

  • It also featured what was called a トロイカ (Troika), which was like a giant sled/sleigh that holds 12 people and is pulled up the hill

  • On some of the course maps, the name was written as Ohmachi

  • And on a pamphlet... Oh! machi

  • In the peak years around the 1950s, 70,000 - 80,000 people visited this ski area each winter

  • At closing, that number was down to around 10,000 people

  • The Shinshu Omachi Challenge Field  信州大町チャレンジフィールド  (an off-road course) currently operates in this location
