Yasuda Chomin

Agano City, Niigata Prefecture

安田町民スキー場 新潟県阿賀野市

Yasuda Chomin was a small ‘skiers-only’ area on the northern slopes of the 101.6m Kuboyama. It was in what used to be Yasuda Town in Niigata Prefecture, about 30km to the south-east of central Niigata City. Chomin basically means ‘managed by the town’. Yasuda Town merged with one other town and two villages in April 2004 to become Agano City. The Suntopia World amusement park is on the other side of the same hill.

Further Information

  • Yasuda Chomin sold itself as being the closest ski area from central Niigata City

  • Local records show that in 1985 the 340m lift was installed at a cost of 83,000,000 yen

  • It was a skiers-only area - snowboarders were not allowed

  • The single lift has been removed, but floodlights from night operations remain in place

  • A nearby old sign by the side of the road still shows the ski area along with a photograph from when it was open (see above)

  • The Suntopia Bokujo  サントピア牧場  operates at the base area and features ostriches, goats and other small animals

  • The Suntopia World  サントピアワールド  amusement park (open March-November and originally known as Yasuda Island) is located on the other side of the same hill

  • A small train track goes around the hill from the amusement park to Suntopia Bokujo

  • Yasuda Town merged with a town and a few villages in April 2004 to become Agano City

  • (Locally made Yasuda Yogurt is highly recommended!)
