Ojiya

Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture

小千谷スキー場 新潟県小千谷市

Ojiya was a ski area located to the east of central Ojiya City in Niigata Prefecture. It was close to Ojiya Station on the local Joetsu train line and popular with locals, offering floodlit night time skiing. One single lift serviced the fairly short runs at this compact area and the lift towers remain in place. Ojiya opened in 1962 and closed in 1999.

Further Information

  • Ojiya was a small and compact area, mostly used by locals

  • Various competitions were also held here

  • It was located less than 1km from Ojiya Station, just behind the train line

  • There was no large car park at the base area and some people used the train to get there

  • In November 1982 the Joetsu Shinkansen  上越新幹線  high speed bullet train line opened, connecting the Tokyo region with Niigata

  • Once that high speed train line opened, the number of local trains that stopped at Ojiya Station declined

  • The nearest Shinkansen station to Ojiya is Nagaoka Station  長岡駅  (about 18km to the north)

  • The opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen also made the ski areas in Minamiuonuma  南魚沼市  and Yuzawa  湯沢町  more accessible to people living in the Ojiya and Nagaoka region

  • This region was shaken by the powerful Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake  新潟県中越地震  on 23rd October 2004

  • Ojiya Ski Area had already closed before the earthquake (it is thought to have closed in 1999)

  • Parts of the abandoned single ski lift remain in place, though the cables have been taken down
