Yahiko Sancho

Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture

弥彦山頂スキー場 新潟県弥彦村

Yahiko Sancho was a ski area on 634-metre Mount Yahiko, right on the border of Yahiko Village and Niigata City in Niigata Prefecture. The famous Yahiko Shrine is by the main village area at the base of the mountain. A Ropeway lift still goes from the base of the mountain to close to where the ski area used to be. The Yahiko Sancho ski area was open between 1958 and 1975.

Further Information

  • Yahiko Sancho Ski Area opened in 1958 at the same time as the Yahiko Ropeway aerial lift  弥彦山ロープウェイ

  • The ski area closed in 1975

  • The Ropeway is still operating to this day

  • Not much confirmed information can be found about the old ski area - even the local tourism office could not provide any details!

  • The ski area was a few hundred metres from the Panorama Tower  パノラマタワー  (featuring a rotating elevating observatory) and Climbing Car  クライミングカー

  • Those tourist facilities are both located close to the top station of the Yahiko Ropeway

  • The confirmed ski slope was by on the west side of the Yahikoyama Skyline road  弥彦山スカイライン

  • The Yahikoyama Skyline road opened in 1970 and it closes over the winter months, so it seems that skiers got to the ski area was via Yahiko Ropeway

  • The slope that can be seen on the east of the road also seems to have been used as a ski course

  • However, no details can be found regarding that course or any second lift

  • You can now walk up to the top of the old main slope on a zig-zag pathway

  • There are beautiful views of the nearby Sea of Japan  日本海  to the west...

  • ...and of the Echigo Heiya  越後平野  Niigata plain looking the other way

  • Yahiko Village is famous for the large ancient shrine at the base of the mountain

  • Mount Yahiko has an elevation of 634m... the same as the man-made Tokyo Skytree tower
